The fastest route to reliable
material verification
The PLX-Portable performs material verification digs directly on the pipe, in the field. Unlike traditional verification, which requires destructive testing and long wait times, the PLX-Portable delivers full stress-strain results on site in 90 minutes, ready to feed straight into integrity management decisions.

Streamlined testing
With simplified surface preparation and quick testing, a fully Mega Rule-compliant material verification dig can be completed in just 90 minutes, while complimentary 1-day Certified User training gets your team up and running fast.

Industry leading accuracy
According to independent reports, the PLX-Portable has set a new industry standard for accuracy, with record MAPE values for yield and tensile strength (proven by industry round-robin data).

Free instant reporting
Get final results right at the dig site - no delays, no further steps, no extra cost. Reports are instantly generated and accessible anywhere via the cloud.
Reliable data,
every time
Not only is the PLX-Portable the only tool in its class with an international testing standard (ASTM E3499-25), but it’s also been designed to keep you free from risk of technician error and data uncertainties.
Simple, guided user operation walks users through step-by-step.
100+ in-built system safeguards ensure peace of mind when out in the field.
Accuracy that stands up to scrutiny
Common tools such as portable hardness testers operate with a 35% margin of error: a risk that could lead pipes to operate with pressures that are out by 3 pipe grades. MAPE (Mean Absolute Percentage Error) is the pipeline industry’s benchmark for assessing material verification accuracy. And lower is better.
The PLX-Portable consistently delivers the lowest MAPE in the industry, just 3.6% for both yield and tensile strength, with the lowest maximum error on record, as cited in a key industry report. Explore how PIPÂ testing compares with tensile using the tool below.

Case Study: Testing Under Vibration with the PLX-Portable

How one field team delivered accurate, in-situ material verification in a compressor station
In this case study, we follow how a testing provider used the PLX-Portable to overcome vibration hurdles and deliver accurate results, on time and with confidence, helping a major North American operator meet its compliance obligations.
17
PIPES TESTED
With up to three tests completed per day. No delays and no interruptions.
YIELD STRENGTH & UTS
COLLECTED DESPITE ONGOING VIBRATION
Accurate results were delivered on the first attempt, avoiding re-testing or additional excavation.
COLLECTED USABLE MECHANICAL PROPERTY INSIGHTS
The data collected with the PLX-Portable supported MAOP recalculations and TVC compliance for regulatory confidence.
Core components
Indenter Module
This module houses and controls the indenter head, recording both the applied load and measured displacement. It creates up to 5 evenly-spaced indents across a pipe’s surface, enabling users to gather comprehensive material data.

Optical Profilometer Module
Utilising red-light interferometry, this device captures the full 3D profile of residual indents, providing fast and accurate measurements.

Rugged PC & Software
Run on a rugged PC, the bespoke PTW software connects directly to the testing equipment. This software guides users through test procedures, ensures data robustness, and stores all test results locally.

A guided process, from start to finish
The PLX-Portable delivers full stress-strain results in the field through a five-step guided process. Our Portable Testing Wizard (PTW) software walks operators through each step with built-in checks and prompts, giving structural engineers data they can rely on for design decisions.
Prepare Surface
Rapidly prepare the test surface using off-the-shelf tools.
Attach Cradle
Using our bespoke mounting system, attach the cradle to the structure.
Make Indents
Connect the indenter module, make up-to five indents at a time.
Scan Indents
Swap in the profilometer module, which scans the indent profile.
Instant Data Analysis
Our software then analyses the profile shape and gives a stress-strain curve and real-time strength data.

Frequently asked questions
Which pipe grades can the PLX-Portable verify?
The PLX-Portable has been validated across the common API 5L grades used across North American and European pipelines, as well as older pre-API grades still in service.
‍
Does the PLX-Portable meet Mega Rule requirements for material verification?
Yes. The PLX-Portable produces the yield strength, UTS, and traceable data required for Mega Rule (49 CFR Part 192) material verification programmes. A single dig delivers a fully compliant verification in around 90 minutes, with reports generated automatically on site.
‍
Is PLX-Portable data suitable for MAOP recalculation and TVC compliance?
Yes. The PLX-Portable delivers yield strength, UTS, and full stress-strain curves in formats accepted by pipeline operators for MAOP recalculation and TVC (Traceable, Verifiable, and Complete) records. Data has been used to support MAOP work on major North American pipeline systems.
‍
How accurate is the PLX-Portable?
The PLX-Portable has consistently ranked as the most accurate tool in third-party testing. In one round-robin study on seamless pipes it delivered a MAPE (Mean Absolute Percentage Error) of 3.6% on yield stress, well ahead of competing tools. The PLX-Portable has also been validated against tensile testing internally, and this data can be explored on our interactive comparison page.
‍
Can the PLX-Portable be used on coated pipes?
Yes. The PLX-Portable needs only a small area of exposed pipe surface for testing. Coatings can be removed locally with standard field abrasion tools during dig prep, leaving the rest of the coating in place.
‍
Can the PLX-Portable be used on in-service pipelines?
Yes. The PLX-Portable is non-destructive and can be used on pressurised, in-service pipelines during a standard integrity dig. It leaves only a small residual indent, without cutting into the pipe wall or requiring pressure reduction beyond normal dig practice.
‍
Does the PLX-Portable use a recognised standard test method?
Yes. The PLX-Portable uses PIP testing, formalised in ASTM E3499-25. It is the only in-situ tool of its class recognised by an international standard, giving pipeline operators a defensible basis for material verification data submitted to regulators.
